A new option in spine surgery

Motion is our Foundation.

Foundation Surgical develops spine procedures designed to relieve nerve compression without giving up motion. Our flagship procedure, Vertebral Body Osteotomy (VBO®), restores height within a single vertebra, so neighboring vertebrae aren’t fused across the disc.

The VBO difference

VBO®

VBO (Vertebral Body Osteotomy) is a motion-preserving procedure that restores height within a single vertebra.

Restore height within the vertebra. Preserve motion across the disc.

Instead of joining two vertebrae together, VBO is designed to create more room for the nerve by restoring height within a single vertebra. Correction and bone healing stay within one bone, and the discs above and below it are left to move.

How VBO works

01

VBO targets the source of compression.

For appropriately selected patients whose nerve compression comes from lost foraminal height.

02

VBO restores height within one vertebra.

A controlled osteotomy, supported by the Vertiwedge® implant, restores and holds vertebral body height.

03

VBO leaves the discs free to move.

Because neighboring vertebrae aren’t fused across a disc space, VBO is designed as a motion-preserving option.

Vertiwedge® Intraosseous System

Bilateral fixation through a single incision.

Bone screws and a lateral plate secure the near side of the vertebra. A proprietary deployable staple mechanism, protected by issued and pending patents, extends across the vertebral body to secure the far side, all through the same lateral approach.

Randal Betz, MD, Founder and CEO of Foundation Surgical
“When patients hear they need a fusion, too many feel their only options are to live with the pain or accept a fusion that limits how they move. VBO was built to give them another choice.”

Randal Betz, MD, Founder and CEO. Past President of the Scoliosis Research Society and former Chief of Staff at Shriners Hospitals for Children–Philadelphia, Dr. Betz pioneered intravertebral correction, the principle behind VBO, more than 25 years ago.
